TMJ (jaw) pain and dysfunction
The TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) describes the interface between the bottom jaw bone and where it attaches to the skull above the cheek bone on either side. There is a disc between the joint that assists with a rotating and gliding movement of the jaw as it opens and closes. There are also some key ligaments and nerves in this area that can contribute to sensation and in some cases, the experience of pain or dysfunction.
Symptoms of TMJ dysfunction can include:
- Jaw clicking or locking that won’t go away
- Headaches
- Pain at the jaw (but not always)
- Clenching teeth
- Grinding your teeth at night
It can also be linked to issues such as:
- Tooth pain
- Ear pain
- Tinnitus
- Sore throat
- Neck pain
Why do people get TMJ Dysfunction?
TMJ symptoms can vary between a nuisance to very debilitating. Some people experience significant reductions in the opening of their mouth as well as their ability to chew and even therefore speak or express themselves.
Sometimes we need to work alongside other practitioners such as dentists or oral medicine doctors.
It sometimes might be connected to a trip to the dentist but certainly not always. If your dentist has flagged grinding or bruxing, or if your jaw is sore after a dental review and does not settle within a few days– it is worth a review.
Other reasons may be (but not limited to):
- Trauma – example a knock to the face from an energetic toddler; boxing
- Postural (there are muscle connections directly from the mouth and throat to your shoulder blade!)
- Preferred chewing on one side
- an imbalance between the muscles of the jaw as well as interplay between the ligaments, joints, your posture and the neck.
TMJ treatment can be quite intense but often responds very quickly within 2-3 specific sessions.
Treatment may include:
- Education
- Gentle massage (external and internal to the mouth) and mobility techniques for the jaw
- Jaw exercises
- Learning how to relax the jaw throughout the day
- Dry needling where indicated
